T-Type MGs

Model Guide

The MG T-Type is a series of body-on-frame open two-seater sports cars that were produced by MG from 1936 to 1955. The line of T series MG cars spanned two eras of pre- and postwar motoring.

The TA was launched in 1936 and was the first of the T series, it was not a car that Kimber and the workforce initially enthused about. The TA was longer and wider than its predecessor, the car was also much more comfortable and roomier and had the luxury of hydraulic brakes.

In 1939, MG introduced the TB, there were not many cosmetic changes externally from the TA, it was not until the bonnet was opened that the differences became apparent. The engine was more appealing – it was capable of far more tuning than the old TA engine and was much more reliable.

Following WWII, the series was revived in 1945 as the TC, it was modelled after the pre-war MG TB. It had a similar engine, gearbox and axles, with the only significant changes being to the body. It was widened by nearly 4″ across the seats.

Then the TD was introduced in 1949 and is described as the most popular of all the T series. It was the first MG since 1936 to incorporate some major styling changes. Every panel was different compared to the TC. Although the fascia was new, it remained strictly traditional.

The final T-Type was launched in 1953, it was named the TF, greeted with mixed reactions from enthusiasts and journalists alike. Referred to as ‘the last of the square riggers’ the TF was based on the same chassis and mechanical components as the TD Mark II.
