Trophy grid at maximum for Brands meet
The MGCC’s MG Trophy Championship has maxed the Brands Hatch grid for the first time and will field 32 cars for the opening rounds of the 2015 championship season on the 2/3 May.
Trophy co-ordinator Pete Macwaters said “For the first time in the championship’s history we will have a full grid at Brands Hatch for the first two rounds of the season. In fact we had 33 entries at the start of the month and were into reserves, something that was new for me”.
With no race sponsor and one of the two races being televised for ‘Motors TV’ Macwaters decided to sponsor the races himself in memory of his father who used to bring him to Brands to watch the racing in the 60’s. He went on to say “I have clear memories of standing on the banking watching all sorts of racing both club and international, I’ve watched all the greats at Brands including my hero Jim Clark”. “My dad’s nick name was Maxie so it’s appropriate that we’ve maxed the grid” said Macwaters.
All 3 classes of the ZR will be represented with the majority in class C, the 170bhp cars, which is proving to be very popular. Aussie champ Cody Hill will be racing in 2014 champ, Chris Bray’s 190 car, Paul Luti will be competing in a 170 for the first time and Albanian driver Avni Ropica will be having his first tin top races. “Brands is going to be very exciting” concluded Macwaters.
MGCC INVITE 50s SPORTSCARS TO THE BATTLE OF BRANDS
The MG Car Club is turning back the clock to the glory days of racing from the 1950s and 1960s, with an invitation race for sports cars and sports racing cars of the 1950s and 1960s.
The race will form part of the Club’s busy schedule at its upcoming Brands Hatch race meeting on Saturday 2 May and is for cars up to 1500cc.
The Club’s Brands Hatch meeting is traditionally one its most popular, with good numbers of spectators and competitors enjoying plenty of motorsport action over the long weekend.
The Invitation race is intended for sports cars from any marque; the entry fee for the race is just £250, with a 15-minute qualification period in the morning, followed by a 20-minute race on the Indy Circuit in the afternoon. So far, the club has had entries including a Lotus Eleven, a Lotus Nine and entries from several Ginettas.
Ron Gammons, the MG Car Club’s Competitions Chairman, said: “Though we have obvious connections to MG, we’re really keen to see as many different marques as possible involved in this race. The scope for entrants is really wide: Lotus, Morgan, Lola, Mallock, Elva – it’s almost endless.”
Spaces on the grid are proving popular, so anyone interested is advised to contact the Club’s Competition Secretary, John Hutchison on 01235 849738, or visit www.mgcc.co.uk/motorsport for further details.
