Racing with the MG Car Club: A proven route to professional motorsport

Racing with the MG Car Club - Rob Huff

THE news that former MG Trophy racer Jack Goff has signed as a works driver for MG this season shows once again that racing with the MG Car Club is a proven route into the world of professional motor racing.

Jack finds himself in good company, as the latest in a long line of racers who began their career with the MG Car Club before moving on to wider success not only in the British Touring Car Championship, but also in the World Touring Car Championship.

Drivers like Robb Gravett, who won the Club’s BCV8 Championship in 1986 and the BTCC in 1990, or Paul O’Neill, who began his career at the wheel of an MGF in the MGF Cup before going on to podium success and a place as a fan favourite in the BTCC. MG fans will also remember Fiona Leggate, who progressed from MG Trophy to compete in the BTCC at the wheel of the Team Kartworld MG ZS in 2007.

Another driver schooled with the MGCC is former World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff. Huff’s formative racing years were spent in the Club’s BCV8 Championship before progressing on to the BTCC and later WTCC where he won the World title for Chevrolet in 2012.

It’s possible to compete with the MG Car Club in an MG Metro for as little £4,000 – probably the cheapest way into motorsport in the UK.

A race-ready MG ZR can be bought for just £3,000, with a season costing around £4,000.

With a fantastic variety of cars competing, the Club’s seven championships and two series offer competitors the opportunity to experience a variety of racing disciplines from modern front-wheel drive hot hatches through to traditional, rear-wheel driver sports cars.

Not only is the Car Club’s racing affordable, it also offers access to some of Britain’s best-loved circuits with the likes of Brands Hatch, Silverstone and Donington all featuring on the Club’s packed calendar.
