1933 Mille Miglia class-winner visits Abingdon
After being on display at the Goodwood Revival weekend, the MG K3003 Magnette that won its class in the 1933 Mille Miglia race came back home to Abingdon to visit the MG Car Club.
K3003 was the first non-Italian Mille Miglia class-winner, and it also won the Ulster TT in the same year. The MG K3s of 1933 are steeped in history, and all of this has been captured in a 464 page book by Graham Cocks, entitled ‘The Mighty MG Magnettes of 33’.
Kimber House wasn’t the only place that the K3 visited whilst in the area. Italian domestic appliance company Smeg have just recently moved their UK office to Abingdon, and they were keen to celebrate the new opening with the car.
The K3 raced through their headquarters in Guastalla, northern Italy when it won back in 1933. Interestingly, their new offices are located on part of the old MG factory site.
Mike Giddings, Managing Director of Smeg UK said: “It was a privilege to see such a historically significant car in person. There are so many wonderful links between this beautiful vehicle and Smeg’s Italian roots that we jumped at the opportunity to bring it back to the factory site.
“Our new building, Magna, hopes to hint to MG’s legacy throughout,” he added.
Whilst the car was here, we put together a short video with owner Peter Briggs that you can watch below.
