The MG Car Club has received some exciting news about a project MG Midget. The current owner would like to donate the project to a deserving Young Member, so we are looking for someone who would like to take this on.

There are a few downsides – its stripped to a rolling shell, and needs a full restoration! So time, space, and some money is going to be required. On the plus side, it’s a nice specification of car, fully DVLA registered and will make a brilliant car when completed.

The owner, Mark Compton-Harris commented, “Time and lack of funds were my downfall for this project. I have owned it from 1998 and had 15 years of fun driving it before taking it off the road for a ‘quick’ restoration which, many years later still hasn’t happened.

I really hope we can identify someone to take it on, as I know this would make it easier for my son to let it go. The thought of it getting broken up for parts is upsetting, hence the offer of giving it to the right person for free as an incentive to take it.”

The MG, named Hilda, from its registration, is a MK2, chrome bumper, registered 1965, in green with wire wheels and 1275 engine fitted. It also includes some rare knock- on alloy wheels. The car appears on the DVLA database, and the V5 is in the current owner’s name. It has been owned by the current owner for 26 years and used on the road for the first 15 of those years. It has the usual rust issues, so does need a full paint strip, but is by no means a complete rot box, and definitely saveable.

The MG Car Club has a thriving Young Members branch and access to a huge resource of technical information, through the MG Midget Register and a country wide network of Centres. The MG Car Club is the oldest MG Club, originally set up by the MG factory to support the cars’ owners, which it still does to this day, just over 94 years on.

Chris Taylor, chairperson of the Young Members branch commented, ‘It is a fabulous opportunity for someone to take on the heritage of this project. Once we identify a new owner, we can support them with the plenty of information and help from our members and contacts, with information and spare parts sources. The Young Members are an active bunch and happy to guide someone in this exciting project. The MG Midget is a fantastic classic, easy to work on, and the best fun on the road!”

Lorraine Noble-Thompson, Chair of the MG Car Club stated, “ We are very supportive of our Young Members starting out on their ownership journey, and this gives someone a real chance to dive in to the exciting world of MG cars and their heritage. Our members have a huge depth of knowledge on the detail of these cars, which is readily shared around the MG family. Our partners linked with the club are willing to help out – our new club members insurance scheme provides off road and workshop tools cover, and is geared to providing insurance to Young Members, and our parts partnership helping to reduce the costs of parts. We just need the lucky recipient to gain from all this experience and benefits.”

The car is currently in the care of the Young Members team and is located near to the car’s birthplace, and home to the MG factory at Abingdon. It is also home to the MG Car Club.
