Mike Parker
I have known Mike and Caroline for around 12 years and upon our first meeting it was immediately obvious Mike and I had a connection. Not only did we share the interest in MG Midgets but we seemed to know the same characters from the Oxfordshire motor trade back in the 70’s and 80’s, good or bad and could compare our experiences in the trade.
From 1972 Mike worked in the Service Reception of Hartwells Abingdon, initially at the Vineyard and later at Drayton Road. Here he became highly regarded by the customers and colleagues for his can do attitude where nothing was too much trouble. This attribute stayed with Mike for the rest of his life. It was living in Abingdon, and working for Hartwells that made Mike fall in love with the Midget. When Mike was young his father wouldn’t allow him to have a sportscar, so Mike started off in a A35, but he soon purchased a 1972 Midget!
If any help was required Mike would be there, he knew the Midgets inside out and was only a call away, although in later years Caroline put a stop to Mike working on Midgets when one of their wheels overtook them whilst driving around Abingdon! One example of the generosity of Mike that was told to me being when ten lorry loads of wet cement was due to arrive at Dave Cato’s property. A quick call to Mike and he was there to help rake it out!
Mike joined the MG Car Club 26 years ago, helping with the Abingdon Works Centre before becoming Chairman of the Midget Register for seven years. It was during his tenue that he managed to persuade me to join the MG Car Club Midget Register committee and before I knew it he had persuaded me to run the Register website. We spent many happy times together organising Register matters, local natter events and more. Most of you will know that Mike was not great with technology, although Caroline tells me that having acquired a smart phone more recently he was able to move into the 21st century which came in handy when he took on the Midget and Sprite Race Championship, having never raced a Midget in his life, replying to various driver enquiries!
Many of Mike’s friends will have known him for many more years than me and doubtless will have more tales to tell. For me it was always great to meet with Mike on any occasion as it nearly always resulted in good banter. I can recall many good times we had with Robin Cloke, who Mike often described as ‘class’, reassembling his MGB, or on road run’s and shows where Robin would happily sit with the bonnet up and telling all those stopping to chat that the car had had a full nut and bolt rebuild! I hope that the two of them are sat together now!
Mike could be relied upon to help out at the Car Club whenever help was needed and sometimes when it wasn’t! He always had an opinion on things which were not always agreeable to some but at least people knew where they stood and any disagreements were soon forgotten afterwards.
I will remember Mike as a great friend and will miss him terribly both in my own lifetime and in the world of MG at events, shows and runs where his huge personality will be sorely missed by us all I’m sure.
Finally I would like to offer my sympathy to Caroline, Jane, Clare and Martha following Mike’s untimely passing and I am sure will be joined by all his friends and aquaintances in offering the Family any help and support in the coming days, weeks and months as the grieving process takes its natural course.
Rest in peace Mike.
