AmD MG6s look to continue good BTCC form

The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship heads to Donington Park for the second round of the year this weekend, with the AmD with AutoAid/RCIB Insurance Racing team hoping for another positive weekend in its pair of MG6 racers.

The season opener at Brands Hatch marked the first time that West Thurrock-based AmD had run the ex-Works MG6 GTs in the series, and with four point-scoring finishes, early expectations were exceeded. Tom Boardman came close to a fairlytale podium finish at Brands Hatch in what was the 34-year-old’s first appearance in the BTCC since the 2011 season.

“With a chance of rain on Sunday, the weather could play into my hands as I’ve always gone well in wet conditions, but I’m hoping that we can push for points in all three races regardless of whether it is wet or dry,” said Tom.  “We’re learning all the time and after a good performance as a team at Brands, we’ve got to try and build on it this weekend.”

Meanwhile, Fife racer Rory Butcher picked up a hat-trick of points finishes in Kent on his first meeting with the team, ensuring he has already matched his points score from the 2017 season when he competed in the final four rounds of the year with the Motorbase team.

With vital experience from a full race weekend now under his belt, Rory will seek to add to his points tally this weekend to try and maintain his position towards the sharp end of the Independents’ and Jack Sears Trophy standings.

“I’m feeling positive after the results at Brands Hatch but it is important that we stay realistic going into the weekend,” said Rory. “We are still learning about the car every time we go on track and I think we need to take the same approach as we did last time out and keep our feet on the ground. It’s a long season and points will make prizes at the end of it, so we have to focus on trying to make sure we pick up three points finishes this weekend and get a good score on the board.”

Shaun Hollamby, team principal, added: “Brands Hatch was a fantastic weekend for us with the MGs, but we have to remember that it only our second meeting with the car and we are still learning every time we hit the track. With that in mind, the target for both Rory and Tom has to be to try and score points in each of the three races to so we can build on the good start we enjoyed in the opening round and we can try to maintain our strong position in the early season standings.”
